WE EMBRACES REGENERATIVE FARMING
In its coffee production activities, Butta Farmers’ Cooperative Society has been struggling with a range of challenges: low yields, vulnerability to climate extremes such as droughts, floods and heat waves, monoculture, missed potential, and low prices.
Profound analysis of root causes pointed out that these challenges can all be traced back to poor soil conditions and lack of biodiversity and shading trees.
In order to address these root causes, Butta has developed a concept for regenerative farming, which was successfully piloted and implemented during the past four years, at a number of its members’ farms. The concept comprises:
- Soil reconditioning: mulching with recycled farm waste, composted material and cow dung and reducing tillage.
- Improved crop management, e.g. pruning, shading and intercropping (mainly banana).
- Ground works, particularly in construction of contour buns and the establishment of stone embankments and zoning.
- Agroforestry, i.e. planting of trees for shading, water management and biodiversity.
- Integrated pest management, i.e. reduced stress of coffee plants and increasing the population of beneficial insects.
- Mobilizing and assisting 30 farmers, by providing training, technical assistance and tools.
The concept proved to be successful in addressing the root causes. Challenges were overcome, farm incomes increased and diversified, and food security for the farmers’ households improved.
In collaboration with two Dutch business partners Emerging Markets Africa (EMSA) and LAGARANTA), Butta has managed to bring more structure to these efforts, and to obtain certificate on organic that covers part of the actions.
The challenge is now to expand the level of intervention (i.e. wider portfolio of actions and measures) and to extend the area of intervention (i.e. more farmers involved, larger acreage). In this respect, Butta will be benefiting from partnership with many other development partners.
Butta Farmers Cooperative Society collaborates with several partners including but not limited to Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), Manafwa district Local Government, Netherlands Embassy in Uganda, Lagaranta Bv of Netherlands, Root Capital and
